The first references to races of bulls
Campo Pequeno, or small date 1741 Alvalade, according to documents that
formed part of the Royal Library of the Mafra Palace. This site was built
a square wooden, reduced capacity for spectators. Since then
There were squares of bulls in some parts of the city, namely Xabregas,
Junqueira, saltpeter and Campo de Santana.
The current Plaza de
Campo Pequeno Bullfight shows succeeded to that existed in Santana, inaugurated the 3
July 1831e closed in 1888, following a survey that
interdicted the building for safety reasons related to bad
conservation of the building in 1888.
The February 19, 1889, the Municipal Chamber of Lisbon
approved a proposal to grant the Parent House, an institution that still today holds
the uniqueness of organizing bullfights in Lisbon, a ground for
the construction of the new Bullring, at Campo Pequeno.
By economic difficulties, the Casa Pia granted a
private company the right to build the enclosure and their exploitation by 90
years, after which the building should be delivered free from any burden
or charges. To this end was the Empreza Lisbonense Tauromachica.
